In the old days, people in Finland believed that every living thing had innate power: a magic called väki. The most powerful väki in the world came from the human vagina, especially older women's genitalia who've given birth. Its magic, vitun väki, was so strong that people with vaginas could banish threats away, such as bears, by pyllytys (freely translated as mooning or literally "butting" as in butt = pylly).
It was believed that if a person with vitun väki encounters a bear in a forest, the said person should bend over and expose their genitalia to the bear. The bear's power being weaker than the vagina fueled väki, the bear would run away. Pyllyttäjät, or mooners / "butters" were also an actual occupation, and people would hire them to moon away the predators and other threats in the fields and forests to protect the cattle. Also menstruation blood was rubbed onto the cattle for protection. Vittu was so strong that it was believed to be also a channel to Vainajala, the Underworld. This channel was especially strong during periods.
